yay! i finished my first roll of film on matt's old manual camera and i was a little worried about whether or not i could actually take pictures without a fancy camera doing all the work for me but it turns out I CAN! now g'wan and have a look-see.

hmmmm how do we feel about these alexander mcqueen for puma sneakerheels? at first i was like "whoa i'm in love" and then i was all," really, sneakerheels? what exactly is the point of a heel that looks like a sneaker?" and then i thought, "go with your gut alexandra. you personally might not ever own and/or wear them, but let's go ahead and like them."

i have tentative plans to do nothing at all this weekend (after a busy stressful {ick i hate that word} workweek) but so far my weekend non-plans are getting filled up with more and more shopping plans. first, there is target for cynthia vincent shoes and maybe some basic v-neck tees (you can never have too many and i like the $8 price tag). then maybe this awesome-sounding-fashion-school-sponsored-for-a-good-cause CLOTHING SWAP in downtown sf (see flyer below). and then maybe off to painted bird for some new (to me) vintage dresses, with a stop by goodwill, thriftown, and salvation army since i'll be in the area, obvi.

i also kinda wanted to sit around and read and draw and take pictures and clean and nap and blah blah blah i'm guessing one to none of these things will actually happen, but ohhhhwelllll.

if you follow me on twitter, you know that i have been looking around for a new album to get into. on monday i listened to broken bells' self-titled debut, she&him's latest, volume two; and under great white northern lights, a live album from the white stripes. all three were great and totally recommend taking a listen (hop on over to first listen on npr, a great resource, to decide for yourselves). but none of them compelled me to listen to them several times a day for days on end. then, by the luck of the irish, i brought my old, old ipod to work. i have no idea why i did this, since the battery has been dead for years. but i did, and i plugged it in and it started to work!! heaven's to betsey i was stoked! all sorts of old playlists and artists and albums were now at my fingertips (slash electrical outlet because it turns out the old girl only works when plugged in but whatevs). that's when i found an old fave, and my thirst has been quenched!

in 2006, vogue released a two cd set of music selected by the kaiser himself. the collection is divided into two playlists: 'at home' and 'at work--fashion show mix', both mixed by french dj michel gaubert whilst karl supervised. it includes songs by lcd soundsystem, caribou, devendra banhart, the pipettes, and the fiery furnaces. the result is super fun and sometimes when 'at work' comes on i pretend i am walking down the runway in a tweed suit and super hott shoes. what? that is so not weird.

GET IT: vogue presents karl lagerfeld: les musiques que j'aime. available on amazon but not itunes( = lame, i know).

this week the house of alexander mcqueen presented its last collection under the late lee alexander mcqueen. and, as one would expect, the line was stunning. i mean ahhh-mazing. it made me sad all over again to think that this pure creative genius has come to an end. the f/w '10 collection was richly divine and intricate, created with a couture-like attention to detail. it merged a space-aginess to the history of fashion. all in all it was just so mcqueen.

ugh i am just dying! this stuff is too good. mcqueen, to me, was the point of fashion. he created art and spectacle and reinterpreted the very notion of clothing and fashion over and over. i just can't seem to get over what his loss means to the world of fashion.enough of the debbie downer routine. instead of being depressed about mcqueen's tragic death, let's focus on the pos, shall we? mcqueen changed fashion and he left a lot to show for it. after i saw the most recent collection i went on a little retrospective tour of sorts on style.com. below are some of my fave looks. what in that what is going on here?? say what you will, but i thought this collection was mind-blowingly awesome. i mean for real. if james cameron gets all sortsa hype for thinking up avatar, should mcqueen get mad props for making pandora look like clothes?! stream this it might just change your life. {S/S2010} you gotta read what they say about this collection on style.com. while it may not be life changing, per se, it will make you understand the concept of high fashion. also, how much FUN would it be to wear this stuff!? {F/W2009} ok so this collection was about a "600-year-old elm tree in [McQueen's] garden," and he "made up this story of a girl who lives in it and comes out of the darkness to meet a prince and become a queen." ah i love it! {F/W 2008}

oh hello, madmen! mcqueen, always ahead of the curve, showing sixties styles in 2005 that are still so au courant today. umm, can i have both of the outfits, now that i mention it?? {F/W 2005} throwing it way back here! look at the little baby kate moss! and hello, lady gaga?! this show was brilliant on many different levels, clearly. {S/S2001} ps, these pictures are formatted diff or something they won't line up right. sorry! i could go on and on about mcqueen all day, but instead of doing so i really suggest you go to style.com and cruise through the slideshows of his works. and read the reviews, they are spot on. and let us all, in memory of mcqueen, push the envelope just a little bit everyday.title song: grace is gone by dave matthewsUPDATE: so it turns out that blogger is the worst and seems to be formatting this post however it wants. it looks fine in preview then comes up totally different when i publish. and quite frankly i don't have the energy to try and fix it again...so look at the pretty pictures and enjoy!

so i'm guessing maybe somebody noticed that i have not blogged since janurary (anybody?? no? bueller?). that's about a six week break, and that seems like a pretty good break to me. i had to get my head out of the game for a bit. to (briefly) explain, i felt like my expectations of this blog were turning into something other than the original intent. this is not my personal style blog and i don't want it to be. i want to share fashion news, shopping tips, my style, your styles, and the cool chick down the street's style. basically, i want to make fashion accessible to everyone and it's hard to go about doing that when i just take pictures of what i wear all the time. not to mention the pressure to take "good pictures" and have a "good camera" and have the time to put together a "good outfit" before work every morning. it's cool that people do that (and obvi i read that stuff everyday), but it just ain't me. ya heard?? i'll also be sharing what music i'm into, craft projects, and fun events in the city. i dunno, we'll all just have to wait and see how it turns out. i hope you all can digg that!

finally! i'm clearing out the old memory card and posted the promised holiday pictures. matt and i took some lovely walks on the beach, which was weird for me since i've never been on a beach at the same time as snow. i was successfully winter'd out--tretorn boots, wool tights, winter coat, mittens, hat, scarf--and i must admit it was quite beautiful. ps, matt's fam got a new puppy and it just might be the cutsest thing i've ever seen.

hi! remember me?? i'm al, and i write this blog. i was on vacation for the last little while and even though i brought my computer along with me, i never ended up opening it once. oh well! i hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday and new years eve! i spent the past two weeks with family and dear friends, and i can't think of a better way to have spent my time. i do have pictures though and i promise i'm going to upload them tonight!

in the meantime, i have been cruising the web in search of inspiration for the new year and to check out what i've been missing. i'm starting to feel about halfway caught up... inspiration is slowly creeping back to me, but i had to take a moment to share with you what really did it for me.

to see how i wore my first rodarte for target piece read more!

i wore this to the gingerbread party on saturday....that's right, one day before the official launch of the line. i picked up this belt (and maybe one in black too, oops!) at the target pop-up in downtown sf a few weeks ago. and relax, i made the trip on sunday to the actual store and scored a few cute items. you'll be seeing those shortly i promise!

this saturday marked the first of many in the christmas party marathon. it was the 13th annual gingerbread party, where friends and family gather to compete against one another in a themed gingerbread scene contest. the older boys team (whom are now all 27 years old) have a pretty strong hand on the competition, but the older girls team (me and my girls!) are known for our attention to detail. this year, for second in a row, the dad's team made a surprising leap to the front with their take on the theme "business as usual".

today officially is officially the beginning of the non-stop holiday party marathon. for the next week, my schedule is jam-packed with one christmas fete after another. naturally, i'll be shopping my closet for most of the outfits (and maybe even recycing outfits, shhhh don't tell!)...but this doesn't stop me from a little online window shopping! here are my holiday picks from modcloth--which, btdubs, is the best place for online window shopping. i'm going east this year to celebrate with my man's fam, so i incorporated some more casual dresses for the laid back parties i have been told to expect.

styling tips: black opaque tights and patent flats or heels--both wardrobe stables-- would go perfectly with all of these ensembles. also, try layering! a thin turtleneck under dress #4 or pullover sweater over dress #2 would be fun and warming tricks. don't forget the jewels...a statement necklace and brooches would knock any of these dresses out of the ballpark, and make them your signature style!

ok, i know i might lose some readers for saying this but: i really don't like madonna. homegirl is done in my humble opinion, and she should call it a day and retire. if she was smarter and less self-obsessed, maybe she should have quit while she was ahead about 10 years ago. i mean, enough already! we get it; your fit and old. good for you! sorry if i don't like my pop stars to belong to aarp.
i recently expressed my relief when i found out lara stone was replacing madonnz for the LV campaign, and was duly worried when i found out she was the new face of dolce and gabanna. but it turns out, it's not that bad! in fact, gasp! i kind of like it. the thought of lady madge doing dishes and eating spaghetti is kindof hilarious, and, i dunno, the concept and setting and styling just seem to work this time around. i suppose it also helps that she isn't photoshopped into psychedelic oblivion in this campaign.

this week's best-dressed blogger is brought to you by the letters l, e, o, p, a, r, and d. i've had the print on my mind since i picked up a little goodie last weekend (more on that to come) and it looks like i was not the only one. let's take a look at these lovely ladies' spotted SIGNATURE STYLEZ!

1. annabel from blushing ambition. my first stroll to this blog and there's a leopard outfit on the first post. was it meant to be? i think so. this bay area chick rocks the perfect everyday look with a bit of spice and the perfect amount of 'tude.

2. julie from orchidgrey. this is julie's second appearance on the best dressed list, and really, is there any wonder why? this adorbs ensemble is perfectly proportioned, totally wearable with a hipster/classic vibe. props.

3. jen from jenloveskev. i love the bold graphic snow leopard look going on here! and the pose in the snow on the rock?! fierrrrrce. also, how is she possibly standing in the snow without a jacket and boots, even for one second? that alone will get you on this california-sissy-weather blogger's list anyday.

4. rumi from fashiontoast. my life would be COMPLETE with the addition of this ridiculous furry, printed oversize sweater. i'm pretty sure i would never take it off. probably the same with those d&g wedges, so i'd basically walk around in some rendition of this outfit everyday. is that wrong?

i was so stoked about yesterday's gilt sales that i just had to tell my girlfriends at work, and the favor was most definietely returned! i told my friend sharon about the sale (where she scored a botkier satchel. sweet!) and she told me about d ekkori, which is just about the coolest thing i've ever seen.

geeezzz am i the worst or what?? i haven't posted in 5 days! i totally effed up the layout and then spent hours trying to rebuild, and the worst is that i'm not even sure i like the new layout. it def needs some more work, but time is getting harder and harder to come by!however, i do pledge to do my best in these busy times....this blog is such a great outlet for me and i appreciate all the people who have checked it out, even when there is just a weirdo pic of a chick making a silly face (not meeeee, the cartoon picture from the previous post). so, here we go again--onwards and upwards!

thank the sweet lord that my least favorite, most oversaturated ads are DONE. louis vitton has officially tapped the gorgeous lara stone to replace madonna. i actually hated looking at those ads.
my rainboots have arrived!!! i opted for the olive/hollyhock tretorns. it was the fuzzy inside that got me. i mean, i might not have to wear socks, and we know how much that idea thrills me.
my homie jess was in nyc this past weekend and got me a suuuuuuper cool bracelet from wrecords by monkey. i love this idea, and honestly the bracelet is as comfy as it is cool!
i'm officially learning how to slappa da bass! i learned two "riffs" as they, i mean WE (i'm a musician now, i can say that) call it. now i just need a bass, and thanks to joanne a temporary solution may be coming my way!
oh, and don't miss my girl diana making headlines and changing the world!

local flavor, global appeal

Any dude who has visited a clothing store in the past year or so will tell you that Americana, as labeled by the capital F Fashion world, has become one of the most, if not the most, dominant trends in menswear of late. American, working-class style is on the racks of all the major clothing retailers and bros from California to Tokyo are rocking Redwings with their Levis, Wayfarers with their TopSiders, and outside of the office sporting a much less polished, more organic look. Beards are cool, plaid is cool, looking like you enjoy getting your hands dirty is cool. Having grown up in a blue collar family on the coast north of Boston, this kind of "look" never really had a name. Folks sport TopSiders because they are practical for days out on the boat, my dad wears Redwing boots because they hold up in the mud all day long, and my grandfather wore Woolrich because because their field coats (the buffalo plaid red and black of course) layer well in the winter and are just the right weight that you don't have to take them off when in and out of the dump truck, back-hoe, or local watering hole. These things are well made, functional, and as it turns out very stylish.

Obviously there are contrasts inherent in working class style meets high fashion but personally I'm on board with the Americana vibe. When practiced in moderation and keeping in mind that I live in San Francisco, not in Minnesota, not in a Polo add, it feels natural to me and always has. The look is classic and thus far has withstood the test of time. I was excited then, when a few weeks back I read (via ACL) that quality Americana had come to San Francisco, to my neighborhood. Union Made opened its doors a month or so ago in the Castro and last weekend Alexandra and I had a chance to check it out. As we walked through the front door we were immediately greeted by the smell of douglas fir, the glow of soft pine, and the enthusiastic hello of owner and co-mastermind Todd Barket. In tow, to Al's delight, was Todd's recently adopted greyhound watchdog buddy, named Buddy. Given it was closing on a Saturday we had the place to ourselves and got the chance to learn a bit about the store while browsing some of the merchandise. Todd was extremely gracious in giving us the grand tour, pointing out some of his favorites and discussing things to come. The selection at Union Made is consistently Americana without being too over the top (no waxed mustaches) or monotonous. The more pricey selections such as those from Alden or Rogues Gallery are balanced well by more affordable goods from Woolrich, Levi's and Alternative Apparel. "Democratic pricing" Todd calls it. As a compliment to this theory, the store also mixes it up with accessories, t-shirts, outerwear, shoes, scarves, ties, totes & even a few man-products. Don't expect to find 20 dollar Wranglers but there's defintely a little bit of everything, for everyone. Having paid his dues in retail at the Gap for many years Todd knows how to run a store and it clearly shows. The place is very cool, it has a nice local flavor and like much of the clothing on the racks bears the mark of hard work and a little elbow grease. When I expressed that I was digging the unfinished pine look of the display furniture Todd gushed that his bf had taken two weeks off of work and built everything from local wood. They had to rent a UHaul to get it all back to the city. Al and I spent almost an hour hanging out and were impressed with their attention to detail and with the diverse selection of man stuff. Keeping my annual income in mind, my two top picks would be the Alternative Apparel sweatshirts (around $50) and the no-name military grade aviators ($100). We walked out with some sweet goods (gotta support your local businesses) but would have been happy just to hang out and drink a beer, Pabst or High Life of course.

let's take a look at the SIGNATURE STYLEZ of the best dressed bloggers this week!

1. advanced style. this is why i want to be old. becuause you can wear a huge faux leopard coat, bright green and pink sneakers (carolyn!! did you see?), leggings, and an old wacky purse and STILL get stopped on the street for a style shot.

2. style rookie. tavi just got back from a spectacular sounding adventure in tokyo and got to pick out her favorite peices by her favorite designer! i mean, how amazeballs is that? plus, she's 13!!!! and she's so stoked on the whole experience that you really just can't help but smile with her. not to mention, this blanket coat is the sickest thing i've ever seen and you should read all about it now.

3. whatiwore. jessica does it again! girl rocks the colored tights and darling dresses and is overall such a positive inspiration that again, it's just hard not to smile with her. this is the type of look i will find myself trying to emulate.

4. the glamourai. oh hi, can i have that outfit for the bazillions of holiday parties i have to go to? talk about perfect proportion, color scheme, warmth factor for holiday party-hopping!.

5. theclotheshorse. the only westcoaster in the bunch, rebecca introduces a more earthy vibe without being in the least bit earthy-crunchy. the outfit is so perfectly original and pulled together. also, ankle socks with tights?? interesting....will give that one a try.

good morning! today i am hopping on board with the style chain gang and reppin the 'belted scarf look'. first of all, i love this game of taking what you see and making it your own and then seeing how it compares to the inspiration. second of all, i kindof love this belted scarf look.

so i had my bro snap a few shots this morning since i knew it would be dark by the time i got home (i hatechu, winter) and i would like to say a few things. a) how do people take pictures so early in the morning? i'm like a space cadet before noon. b) this "shoot" was decidedly less goofy that the last time bro took pics. c) um i forget was (c) was because it's still before noon.

this weekend matt helped me out bigtime and we shot for my final project! i modeled, styled, and did my hair/make-up (i'm a real mutli-tasker slash too disorganized to find someone else), while matt worked his magic behind the lens. we took 672 shots and i am really happy with how they turned out! now i just have to choose the finals and put 'em all together-- i'm digging the layout style of the book above (via anica boutique). can't wait to show you all the final product! coming soon....

first of all, i am so sorry about the slow-down in posting! this time of year is what we in the retail industry like to call, “hella busy.” we’re ramping up for holiday sales, starting (and hopefully completing) projects to be done by the end of the year, and basically running around like chickens with our heads cut off trying to make this year’s numbers.

it’s also what we students like to call, “the end of the semester” and so I have my big final project to do and not a lot of free time to do it.

i’m not trying to throw myself a pity party or anything (but if you want to you can!) i just wanted to explain that is maybe a bit out of my league to post everyday. sorrrrrry!

our resident man-blogger is working on assignment, so i thought i would post something for the dudes myself.
actually i have two things i would like to man-tion (get it? instead of mention?? #imsofunny)....

1. my mom called me sunday morning and told me to get the sf chronicle because there was an article about dan hoyle, aka the golden child. dan is my good friend kailey's brother; he is also a fulbright scholar, and the author and star of a one-man play about nigerian oil politics. the article on sunday was a cute little piece on his fave spots in the city. it was nice. but on the next page there was a great article in about where to find better fitting men's clothes. a lot of the stores were local to the bay area, but the article mentioned that mass retailers are beginning to carry slimmer cut shirts and pants as well. i feel as though a common complaint i hear about men's shirts is how big they are, well it seems as thought the designers were hearing that too and decided to do somethign about it. check it out here! more men's shopping advice by the pocket square here.

2. i realized this morning that i pretty much only own black cardigans and promptly decided that i need to introduce some color into my cardi collection. so i hopped on over to jcrew.com to check out the merch, only to get bored a short little while. my man went into a jcrew store earlier in the week and said he had his eye on a few things, so natch i mosied on over the men's section to see if i could guess what to get him. it was there that i met (online) jack. jack is the men's head stylist at jcrew and he just started a great advice column. the best parts? it looks really cool and it answers some common style q's. so boys, if your not sure to tuck or not to tuck, just go ask jack.

attention: bay area readers!! get yourself to the SFMOMA asap to see the avedon exhibit before it leaves on nov26. it is so amazing. avedon's breadth of work is a fascinating mixture of fashion, politics, art, and social commentary. and honestly, his skill is out-of-this-world. each shot features beautiful details, perfect depth of field, and framing that leaves nothing to be desired. i don't know how to say it, i'm not a photo person, but seriously y'all this stuff is amazing. go to richardavedon.com for more info on where the exhibit will be next and where else you can see it. it is sooooo so worth it, i swearz!

saturday was my oldest friend's birthday and we celebrated with a old skool bbq in golden gate park. it was fun to hang out with all the homies, and see some old familiar faces (blast from the past times a million = so much fun!). it was a beautiful sunny day, but that didn't fool me... i layered to the maxx to ensure i didn't get frostbite in the shade--what? i'm from california! i had a whole bag of layers actually and it proved to be quite helpful, thankyouverymuch.

what i'm wearing: jcrew cracked rainboots (they're ok for mud). hue footless tights. american apparel skirt. vintage plaid buttondown (brooks brothers mabes?). scarf from my sister-in-law, lord&taylor beige cashmere cardi, sunglasses from i don't remember. layers in my bag included: a thicker pair of black leggings. winter jacket. hat. gloves. two hoodies.

last thursday there was an event at my store honoring the 125 year old Steiff Company. perfect time to break out my girlhood ladybug purse and wear it as a necklace, right?! i was surprised at how many compliments i got, but hey—i’ll take it! i felt a little like tavi (minus the designer clothes and plus 10 years) adding a touch of whimsy to the outfit.

good monday-morning! so... OOPS my b! i didn’t post this weekend. at all. but i didn’t do a lot of things that i usually do on the weekend, so don’t take it personally. friday night me and my man went on a movie date and saw pirate radio. not only is it hilarious, the super retro clothes are a trip! then with no class saturday i slept in waaaaay late (which is so luxurious, btw), had a lovely brunch at home, and then went to a friend’s b-day bbq in ggp (post on that later this evening). since the 49ers weren’t playing on sunday, that meant we could actually leave the couch and go do something. matt and i went to the SFMOMA and saw the richard avedon exhibit—which was ahhh-mazing (post on that later too), had a bite, and eventually made our way home. despite my loathing of fall weather, it was nice to be outside and have a purely recreational weekend.

oh ALSO! while i was busy non-blogging, one of the Best Dressed Bloggers linked me on her blog!! WHOA this is BIG NEWS and i pretty much died. if you don’t believe me you should go check out my hyperlinked name…myedit.blogspot.com. Ha I LOVE it!!!

for my final project in styling this semester i have to conceptualize and style a photoshoot. this is why i love school! projects like these are super fun and will come in handy for portfolios in the future.

make a wish

after some suprisingly expensive dental procedures (even with insurance!) and some early christmas shopping bills to pay, it is unrealistic even to make a list of things i would get if i could. instead, my wednesday wishlist is something that cannot be bought. in essence, my wishlist today is YOU!

more than anything material right now, i wish for this blog to be a success. i wish for readers all over the world. i wish for people to find me relatable. i wish that i may inspire even one reader the way i have been inspired by other bloggers. i wish that i can continue to write and ramble about the silly things that make me happy. i wish signaturestyles opens doors for everyone to meet, discuss, collaborate, design, debate, model, style, share, laugh, learn and try something new. i wish for new and exciting ideas all the time so i never bore my readers. and i wish for your suggestions and help to makes this into a dream come true....

the last two days have been rough on me. while usually a pretty steadfast, happy person, for whatever reason dental prciedures throw a wrench into my being as a whole and i tend to melt down in a mayjah way. yesterday was stage 1 of a root canal and this morning i finished it off. i still have to go back next week for a crown. but after today's procedure i threw in the towel, called it a day, and went home to cry and recover while relaxing on my couch. to help me back into my reality, i enlisted karl, marc, and annie. please join me as i sit back relax and enjoy:

Previous to a few months ago, I never felt it was cool to buy clothes. While looking good was vaguely appealing, it didn’t seem worth the imagined shame I would suffer browsing racks and magazines. I can only recall four distinct episodes in my life where I spent any time shopping. For a year in high school I knew the t-shirt racks on Haight Street fairly well. I also collected a couple vintage jackets (one of which I still regularly wear). Senior year in college I went to B Brothers with my dad and got a gold-button blazer, two pairs of wool gab trousers and a couple ties for interviews. Post college I added to my work wardrobe with some more trousers, shirts, ties, a suit and a pair of shoes. Around the same time I used a gift certificate to get a pair of jeans and a herringbone coat with a sewn-in hoodie on Maiden Lane.

Until two months ago, those were the only jeans I owned. Around that time I decided it was time to start caring. The creator of this blog agreed to go shopping with me (I asked because I felt drastically unqualified to pick out any clothes on my own), and we picked out a second pair of jeans and the first t-shit I’ve bought in about 10 years (not counting the two I made for myself and friends). And I felt great about it. But I also realized how little I own.

So I’ve set aside some money in my budget and put together a bit of a plan, however misguided, to build myself a functional wardrobe. I’ve decided to start with my work clothes. An inventory revealed my blazer, four pairs of trousers (tan, olive, grey and charcoal), about 12 shirts (mostly blues), a black v-neck sweater and a blue cashmere v-neck. Shoes included cordovan tassel loafers and black lace-ups, and gold-buckle belts to match.

The results of my fist shopping trip were mixed. I picked up two sport coats at Macy’s (two-for-one sale), two pairs of brown trousers (light and dark), four shirts (RL and CK; stronger colors and patterns than my current, pale-ish collection), a pair of tobacco lace-ups and a matching silver-buckle belt. I also changed out my gold buttons for blue buttons and resoled by tassel loafers. All this was good. But there were some frustrations. One of the sport coats shed a button after three wears. The shoes are still breaking in. One of the pairs of trousers had to go back to the tailor to fix an unfinished hem.

But now that the issues are behind me, I am faced with a bounty of options in the morning. In some ways, I’m a bit lost as to how to put it all together. I also have some ideas for what’s next. Augment my sweaters. V- or zip-neck? Another pair of brown shoes. Chocolate lace-ups or brown Chelsea boots?

A significant change resulting from my increase in shopping (and browsing in preparation for shopping) is, as I walk around downtown, noticing what looks good and what doesn’t. I’ve never paid attention before, but it really is a lot of fun.

UPDATE!!! took a nap (second of the weekend), ate a delicious homecooked meal, and now i'm ready to share!

comfy sunday outfit: leggings, vintage buffalo plaid top, vintage patterned sweater, minnetonka moccs. warm, stylish, and cozy!

so i attempted the textured container DIY project from ps-i made this and this one turned out alright. i took an old edamame container and some puffy paint, dotted it up and spray painted! i think a bottle might look a little better but this one serves the purpose..and looks good with those bangles! i also tried the 'summer scarf' with an old tee and it is very reminiscent of a lion...oops!

what a lovely afternoon! just got back from class where we had a fashion photographer guest lecturer, a little window shoe-shopping with my girl joanne (and i didn't spend any money! woo-hooo!), and now home for a bit before pizza dinn with the fame. to fill my afternoon hours i'm thinking i might embark on a DIY project or two. i found an AWESOME site (via refinery 29) that filled me with totally do-able ideas! pretty stoked, can't wait to check back and show you what i've made*

the first (and in my opinion, only) rule in fashion is...have fun! fashion is all about expressing yourself letting your true colors shine. it shouldn't be worrisome or hard to figure out...just get out there and have fun! to illustrate my point i'm going to share the following "photoshoot" with you, dear readers. i hope you enjoy!

despite the fact that i wanted to crash tonight after a lovely dinner and stroll, i knew i needed to put together a blog post so i could start of my monthly challenge on the right foot. so i set up the camera and timer and all that and gave it my best shot. after fumbling around with the zoom/focus i enlisted the help of my brother to take some outfit shots. this is what happened:

you know that saying? well i can attest that is does not only apply to babies and/or lovelorn teenagers. i recently had to tighten the old purse strings and really watch what i am spending. which for me is just not spending at all, i can't do that only spend a little junk. i can justify too many things. this started this weekend and i was very good: i was at school, then a concert, then home, and the park all weekend. no opportunity to shop. well monday morning rolled around and my wishlist is all of a sudden miles long and full of things i actually must have NOW.

1. lessons on how to "slappa tha bass." for reals, i really want to learn how to play. bad enough that i air-bass in the shower (tmi?)

all hallows eve

since h-dubs is on a saturday this year, it's basically a two-for-one deal. we have two days and nights to dress up. which is perf for someone like me who has some issues with decision making (see, rainboot posts). i like to do it up, and then do something easy, and maybe squeeze in another costume if i can. this year i have three tentative costumes (work, class, and saturday night). last year i only had two, one of which is pictured below:

so not to toot my own horn or anything, but this costume was amazing. i completely rocked it. unfortunately by then end of the day i thought i was going to asphyxiate on the pounds of baby powder that i dumped in my hair. so when i got home from work (oh, did i mention i wore this work and was pretty much the only person dressed up?) all i wanted was to shower and put on something more natural. for the party that night i wore a nuditard and a wig and was eve. it was great. nuditards are super comfy, full of shock value, and a great investment piece. for anyone without a costume at this stage in the game: go get a nuditard and thank me later.

the new 'do

for those that know me this will come as no surprise: yesterday completely overhauled my hair. i went from strawberry blonde to dark brown in the course of an hour and a half. i don't know what inspired this change but i love it! i feel like a different person. my hairdresser is SO fantastic, he makes every color look like my “natural color” (whatever that means anymore). i love how instantly the dark brown changed my complexion completely! my eyes all of a sudden pop with green! my co-worker said i looked super tan! my skin tone looks much more even! it’s such an amazing and fun transformation…maybe that’s why i do something like this 4 times a year.

so…what do you think? i love to hear people’s reactions to things like this, and don’t worry I won’t be offended if you like other colors better. i’m pretty used to that too.

also, socks with open-toed heels? totes digging it! are you?

rainy days ahead

it's that time of year....winter is on its way. in san francisco that means months of mild gray days with hopefully good amount of rain (yes, i went there and while rain is no fun for anyone, it's certainly better than a drought and fires). unfortch for me, my super cute rainboots cracked and now they don't serve their primary purpose all that well. that is to say, they don't keep my feet dry. i can get away with it on light rains, a.k.a. mist, but not for actual drops of water falling from the skies.

i'm not exactly the biggest fan of boots, rain or otherwise (see carousels and bows wherein i discuss that socks are like prisons for my feet. boots are maximum security, but cute). nevertheless, wet feet are pretty awful so i am embarking upon a search for new rainboots. knowing me, this could last all season and then i could put it off again until next october.

After the San Francisco Brooks Brothers absolutely butchered the tailoring job on a new suit I had (almost) purchased last year I thought it was over between the two of us. It was a ridiculous scene. I was pretty bummed too because it was my first suit and I dig the Brothers; their gear is well made, timeless and reasonably priced. If you need a nice suit and you're not Rockafella (said like my folks, with a New England accent) you might as well buy a BB suit. I thought.

Anyways, they say time heals all wounds and I'm thinking it might be worth another shot. Brooks Brothers has teamed up with the costume designer for Mad Men and created this limited edition "Mad Men" suit. Yea yea yea I know every Dick and their dog wants to dress like Don Draper these days but there are several reasons why I'm actually thinking about buying one of these. First, everyone should dress like Don Draper. Second, everyone knows you can't miss, or mess, with gray/charcoal. Third, I'm thinking sharkskin is pretty cool, and definitely NOT the norm over here in the FiDi where I reside from 9-5. Fourth, the cut on these things looks to be RAZOR sharp and, fifth, to top it off I'd be getting a limited edition BB suit for just shy of 1, 000 buckaroos. They're only making 250 of these! This might be the cheapest nicest suit I've seen in a long time. There's 5 reasons why I should make an effort to forgive and forget. I don't know what else to say. Does it come in a 3 piece?

I'll definitely be trying one on, I suggest you do the same.

thanks SO MUCH for your help! by the end of the day alexander wang was the clear winner, so i was on a mission to make it work (love you tim gunn). i stopped by forever 21 and got some faux leather shortie-shorts, walgreens for some athletic socks, my roomate's closet and my own to get all the pieces i would need for my outfit! it's looking so good so far, and i still have two days (kinda) to perfect it. i'm so stoked!!!! i took a pic on my phone but i can't figure out how to upload it here, so just wait till saturday for the final product!

friends, i'm going away for the weekend, which means no new posts during the time when i usually post a lot. i know, i know, most of you are thinking "well shoot, what am i going to do?" but, fear not!. in my absence i leave you a super fun DIY project! i made a gym tote for my workout-buddy/ shopping partner / friend / mentor / possible soon to-be-guest-blogger, jessica a few weeks ago as a super belated birthday present. it's a fun, personal, and useful gift, and it costs me only a few bucks to make! see for yourself, make something while i'm gone (sending it to me is optional).

you'll need: a silkscreen + squeegee, fabric silkscreen paint, some acetate paper (the stuff that's used on overheard projectors), an x-acto knife, a sharpie, a cool image in your head or to trace, spray paint (optional), hairdryer if you are super impatient like me, small paintbrush, and something to print on! some old newspaper/magazine scraps are good to have around too.

silkscreens are super awesome and fun to have around and can be found at your average art supply store. they're not too expensive (mine was a gift--thanks jann and amy!!) and if you take care of them they'll last a long time.

here we go!

supplies. moet optional.

one time i tried to teach myself how to draw fashion illustrations. needless to say it didn't quite work out but the book itself has been an inspiration.

trace the picture you picked out onto acetate. the best place to get this is at a copy center/paper store for like 10 cents a page. if you're artistically inclined, here is where you draw/trace your own image on to the acetate.

then you cut 'em out!

i like to test out the stencil with some spray paint. then you can make adjustments, tape broken lines, etc before you put the final image on your garment.

go time. tape your stencil onto the screen, making sure no spaces are left around the perimeter for paint to seep through. center the screen+stencil on your fabric, so that there is no space between the fabric and the stencil. next, dab a line of paint on the inside of the screen. while applying pressure to the frame (knees, or a partner help with this one) use the squeegee to drag the paint across the inside of the screen. keep dragging the paint, adding more if needed to make sure the stencil has been evenly coated.

carefully lift the screen off of the fabric. make touch-ups (nobody's perf) using a fine paint brush and the fabric paint. icyww, yes that is Jade on my fingertips.

ta-dahhhh! stylish silhouettes on a sac!

for the opposite side, i did a fade effect using a different stencil. for this i simply moved the screen and squeegeed without adding more paint.

i topped it off with a bow...my older stencil but still one of my faves.

finished side 2. the last step is to heat seal your handiwork. just grab a clean rag/random t-shit, put it over your design and iron at the highest setting for a sec. this way you can wash it (good idea for a gym bag) without the paint fading.

try it this weekend and send me some pics... or, if you're already a silkscreen pro (ahem, amy) send me pics and tips!

in a world so blessed by designer collabos it takes a lot nowadays to stand out. and the latest to hit the headlines does just that. opening ceremony is launching a line directly inspired by the film adaptation of "where the wild things are". and let me tell you, these pieces are divine! fall is all about texture (like i said...) and fur is being seen everywhere. my recommendation: if your budget allows, splurge on these whimsical pieces! the silhouettes are modern, feminine, and totally wearable. my fave is on the left--so stylish!

wait a minute!

i mean, whoa! aykm? this site is fantasitc! i just checked out theoutnet.com and have been trying to control the gasps and coos while cruising the site. i subscribe to a lot of different sale sites/emails, but the outnet is something different. first of all, the breadth and depth of their merchadise selcetion is amazing. they have everyting from juicy to 3.1 philip lim to burberry and celine. and all the sales are between 40% and 60% off! so that means you can get these pants (originally $340) for $102!! a pair of dress pants at h&m cost almost that much and these are hella nice and built to last! amazing!

my favorite part of the website is the "dress me" page. you need clothes for the office? hop on over to slick separates. feeling trendy? check out "back to the 80s" or "monochrome". not feeling trendy? that's cool too over in "classic styles". i loooooove this feature, it totally takes the hassle out of online shopping! (i know, i know. shopping sitting down is not a hassle per se, but clicking through endless pages of stuff you don't want is just annoying). remember to sort prices low-to-high so you don't get intimidated. oh, and! if it turns out that say, thakoon, just doesn't cut for your body, simply send it back for a full refund or exchange (not on shipping, duh). in the world of online shopping i don't think it gets any better than this.

knubs and a weave

over the weekend i took all my tearsheets from the september mags (i had a LOT) and assembled them into one nice inspiration book. a little cheeseball, i know, but it cleans up a lot easier and it turns out it's quite helpful. when looking back through all the pages i had torn out, i figured out what i was most attracted to this season. and that, my friends, is texture. yes, more than any color or silhouette or designer in particular, texture--anything that made me want to reach out and feel the fabric-- was ripped out and sprayglued.

with my inspiration as such, and the weather turning awful (i hate the fall, but that's another post all together), on tuesday i got crafty with my tights and paired them with my black woven boots. the colors match but the textures contrast in a really cool way.
